Pushkar Fair- An Auspicious Fair and Festival of India

When it comes to tourism in India, colorful and lively fairs and festivals always capture the center stage. Various fairs and festivals of the country are globally recognized and celebrated with pomp and show due to deep-rooted traditions and customs in the country. Demonstrating the vibrant culture of the country, these fairs and festivals occupy a prime place in the Indian tourism industry, as a number of people explore the country in order to participate in them. Pushkar fair, Mewar festival, Kaila Devi fair and Marwar festival are some of the popular fairs and festivals of India that attract people to visit the place again and again. Of late, Pushkar fair has got due recognition due to the presence of the Lord Brahma Temple, picturesque lake and camel fair.

The Cattle Fair of Pushkar works to attract not only domestic travelers, but also international travellers. The fair houses over 50,000 camels which are sold, raced and decorated. Visitors also perform a holy dip in the Pushkar Lake to seek blessings at the only Brahma Temple. It is believed that the water of the Pushkar Lake is very sacred and the ritual of taking dips in the holy water is believed to bestow salvation. The holy dip on Kartik Poornima is considered as the most auspicious time. Before sunrise, people used to gather in the ghat, aided by the ‘pandas’ (Brahmin priests) to perform the sacred bath.
